I use Thunderbird constantly and it does have a real case of falling from the ugly tree and hitting every branch possible. Krystian Polański from Monterail showed what it could look like in a blog post. They go into even more detail on another blog post.

Here's what it could look like:

An impressive and very clean design, I approve. I might even be a little bit in love with it, still it's completely unofficial and obviously a mock-up, but maybe someone will take note of it?

Considering the amount that I use Thunderbird, I would really appreciate a design like that. It would fill me with delight rather than dread to open the application up to send off some emails.

If you have any good suggestions on replacements for Thunderbird right now on Linux, I would love to hear about it in the comments.

Thanks reddit.

If you don't mind having your mail passing through a 3rd party server, nylas mail is pretty good.

Looks like a qt application; though in the blog post they say that it's based on mozilla's style guide for FirefoxOS.

The mockup isn't all that different from the current 'vertical layout', though. On a widescreen monitor it's probably the most efficient layout, and looks OK too. My #1 complaint currently is that the latest update has broken the external editor plugin; so I can't use vim to type emails anymore. I don't wish to go back to Mutt either, since offlineimap is a PITA when working with multiple accounts.

I would love it if Thunderbird looked like that.

The thing that I notice is that the e-mails need to have icons before them. This makes the rows at least twice as high and you actually need a full page to display a reasonable number of e-mails. This is why convergence doesn't work. Desktops don't need room for your entire finger to click a line. Desktops have different needs.

Just beware that there's a pesky bug going 'round that will wipe the settings at random.
Frankly, I was quite thrilled about Nylas/N1 but it just wasn't stable enough for daily use in my experience.

That Thunderbird skin is gorgeous though; I'd love that to be implemented in a dark version!

I don't see much of a problem with the icons in the mockup. If it's too big for one's liking, I suppose a size switch could be implemented - it could be as small as the current "star" icon without any issue.

That skin look good, I agree.

Nylas has just released 2.0 version a couple days ago though, seems to have fixed that problem.
